About Kleinmond, Western Cape

Kleinmond is a small coastal town in the Overberg region of South Africa's Western Cape province. It is located within a UNESCO-designated biosphere approximately 90 kilometers east of Cape Town, between Betty's Bay and Hermanus. The town's name, which means "small mouth" in Afrikaans, alludes to its location at the mouth of the Bot River lagoon. Stone axe heads discovered in the area suggest that people lived in the vicinity of Hangklip 20,000 years ago.

Wild Horses

There have been wild horses in the vlei (wetlands) between the current parking area in the Rooisand Reserve and the river mouth at Kleinmond. This is around 6 kilometers away, and a bunch of free-roaming, feral horses frequent this region for grazing. They never leave the swamp and neighboring dunes, and can be seen from the asphalt road or closer up if one walks along the beach towards Fisherhaven.
Their existence has spawned a number of fantastic ideas and romantic stories about their beginnings. One of these is that they are the offspring of horses hidden from the British Army during the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). According to Dr. van der Merwe,who has been monitoring the horses for the past 30 years, they appear to be a distinct sub-group of the former Cape Horse of the 18th and 19th centuries, known as Boland Waperd, which were farm horses used for ploughing, hoeing, and pulling wagons and carts. They are historically significant, and ecologists believe they play an essential function as large herbivores (similar in size to buffalo, eland, and zebra) that live in the Botriver's swampy estuary.
